Why Do I Feel So Behind In My Career Right Now?

There is a particular feeling that shows up in the middle of a career change. You look around at where you thought you would be by now, or where others seem to be, and a quiet voice says you are behind.

It is one of the most common things we hear, and one of the heaviest to carry. So if that is where you are today, this one is for you.

The Comparison Trap

Feeling behind almost always comes from comparison. Someone else got the promotion. A former colleague announced a new role. A peer seems to have it all figured out.

But you are comparing your full, complicated, in-progress story to a single polished headline. You do not see their doubts, their setbacks, or the parts they are quietly struggling with. Comparison takes your real life and measures it against someone else's highlight reel, and it will win that game every time if you let it.

Careers Are Not A Race, And They Are Not A Straight Line

We are taught to think of careers as a ladder, one clean step after another. Real careers rarely work like that. They twist, they pause, they double back. People change direction in their forties and fifties. People start again and thrive. The detours are often where the most growth happens.

Being in the messy middle does not mean you are lost. It means you are between chapters, and that space always feels uncertain while you are standing in it.

You Are Not Behind, You Are Building

Everything you have done still counts. The experience, the setbacks you have navigated, the skills you have picked up along the way, none of it disappears because you are pausing or pivoting now.

You are not starting from nothing. You are starting from experience. That is a very different, and much stronger, place to begin.

Small Steps Are Still Progress

When you feel behind, the pressure to make one big leap can be paralysing. You do not need a giant move. You need the next small step.

One updated line on your profile. One conversation with someone you trust. One honest think about what you actually want next. Momentum builds quietly, and it builds from small, doable actions, not grand gestures.

Be Kind To Yourself In The Meantime

Speak to yourself the way you would speak to a friend in the same spot. You would never tell them they are behind or running out of time. Offer yourself that same warmth. A career change is hard enough without carrying self-criticism on top of it.

Why Your Career Story Is The Hardest One To Write
Something came up in a session with one of our program participants recently that we hear almost every time. She is a senior people and culture leader. Twenty years of experience, restructures, national teams, the lot. She had spent hours pulling her profile together and she said this: "When you are so far inside your own thing, you cannot see it. The further you go, the more you have done. An...
What Happens When They Ring With No Warning?
It is Thursday morning. You are in the middle of something. Your phone rings, you do not recognise the number, and you answer it. It is a recruiter, calling about a role you applied for eight days ago and had half stopped thinking about. She has your application open in front of her. She has twenty five minutes. By tomorrow, she will have decided whether you go forward. That call is the screen...
Are You Talking Yourself Out Of The Room?
Ā  Most people do not lose interviews because they lack experience. They lose them because of how they describe the experience they already have. Words like only, just, a little bit and basic shrink real work down to something forgettable, and the person across the table has no way of knowing what sat behind them. Here is why that happens, and how to fix it without overselling. What Undersellin...
